The Trollface — sometimes called "Coolface" — appeared in 2008 in a webcomic by artist Carlos Ramirez posted on 4chan. The illustration spread across forums, imageboards, and rage comics throughout the early 2010s and became one of the defining visual shorthand expressions of early internet trolling. Its recognizability has outlasted most memes from that era.

The TROLL token on Solana started with a negligible market cap in mid-2024. A community takeover team, operating under the entity Troll Network Limited, took charge and negotiated an exclusive worldwide licensing agreement directly with Ramirez for use of the Trollface in the crypto and merchandise space. Ramirez retains an 11% royalty on net merchandise revenue from the deal.

The licensing agreement was publicly reported and confirmed by Decrypt, and the deal formally closed on August 29, 2025.

The licensing path was not uncontested. While negotiations were underway, Ramirez was also tied to the promotion of a separate, competing "Trollcoin" token.

That rival briefly reached a market cap near $4 million before collapsing roughly 99%, and its failure underscored why the officially licensed TROLL — the token that actually secured exclusive rights — has held the stronger position. The episode is frequently cited as a real-world stress test of the license.

Institutional recognition followed. On September 22, 2025, Coinbase added TROLL to its listing roadmap — a public signal of a forthcoming listing that triggered an immediate price surge of roughly 21% and stands as one of the project's major milestones.

TROLL found renewed momentum in May 2026, rallying roughly 96% on May 4 and a further 77% on May 10. The move briefly pushed the market cap above $100 million and drew an estimated 14,000 new holders in a single week before the token cooled off again.

TROLL maintains a holder base of more than 44,000 on-chain addresses — a figure that grew by roughly 14,000 during the May 2026 rally — and keeps active liquidity on Solana DEXs, primarily through PumpSwap.

Beyond decentralized trading, the token is listed on Phemex (as a TROLL-USDT futures pair), Bybit Web3, KuCoin, MEXC, and Coinbase — a broader exchange footprint than most Solana memecoins carry. The project website at trololol.io and community channels on X and Telegram remain the primary coordination points for the community.

TROLL's climb has generated its share of community lore. In one widely shared "fumble" story — covered by Decrypt and Yahoo Finance — a trader who bought about $1,300 of TROLL (roughly 9 SOL) in August 2024 sold the entire position within hours for close to the same 9 SOL.

Had they simply held, that early stake would later have been worth on the order of $6 million, a vivid illustration of how far TROLL traveled from its sub-$10,000 origins toward its all-time high.
